Riot is stepping in on one of League’s most-debated metas of the year. Patch 26.16, live August 12, buffs marksmen and nerfs support roaming to pull bot lane back toward traditional ADCs.

How We Got Here

Lead Gameplay Designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison laid out the chain of events: mage picks sat around 20% of bot lane at MSI 2026, a normal share. Patch 26.11 buffed melee supports and nerfed ranged Enchanters to curb hyper-carry ADC comps, but players found ways around the new anti-roaming and anti-lane-swap restrictions at the same time. The result was two swings in the same direction: away from ADC bot lane and toward mage bot with a roaming support. By the Esports World Cup and KeSPA Cup, mage priority had climbed sharply, and the trend spilled into ranked.

What’s Changing

Riot isn’t trying to kill mage bot outright, just close the gap. Confirmed changes for 26.16 include buffs to Berserker’s Greaves, Fleet Footwork, Heal, and ADC magic resist, alongside an increased gold penalty for supports who roam. Riot’s framing: ADC should stay the expected class for bot lane, especially at the pro level, while leaving room for mage as a viable alternative rather than the dominant pick.

Why It Matters

This is Riot correcting its own overcorrection. The Season Start 2026 changes and Patch 26.11 both nudged the meta, and each nudge produced a side effect the balance team didn’t fully anticipate. If 26.16 lands as described, expect ADC pick rates to recover in both ranked and pro play without mage disappearing from bot lane entirely.
