Epic Games used its State of Unreal 2026 keynote to reveal Unreal Engine 6, a full merger of the traditional Unreal Engine 5 toolset with the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). Early access is targeted for late 2027.

What UE6 Actually Does

The pitch is simple on paper: build once, deploy anywhere, whether that’s traditional platforms, Fortnite itself, or a studio’s own live-service ecosystem. Under the hood, UE6 shifts core gameplay programming toward Verse, Epic’s own language, and begins phasing out Blueprints, the visual scripting system an entire generation of developers learned Unreal on. Alongside the UE6 announcement, Epic shipped Unreal Engine 5.8, the final major UE5 release, and open-sourced Lore, a new Rust-based version control system aimed at replacing Git and Perforce for large game projects.

The Numbers Behind the Push

Epic backed the announcement with real traction: over $1 billion paid out to UEFN creators since launch, the Epic Games Store now hosting more than 6,000 games from over 3,000 partners, and third-party PC game spending on the Store up 57% in 2025 to $400 million. Epic is also rebuilding the Epic Games Store’s backend and connecting it more tightly to Fortnite, with purchases on the Store now granting Fortnite cosmetics tied to that game’s IP.

Why It Matters

Unreal Engine underpins a huge share of the games industry, including several titles Ralify covers directly. A merger this fundamental between AAA tooling and Fortnite’s creator ecosystem could reshape how mid-size and indie studios build and distribute games over the next few years, well beyond anything Epic ships itself.
