GTA VI: Everything We Actually Know About Grand Theft Auto VI

Last updated August 5, 2026

Grand Theft Auto VI is the most anticipated game of the decade and also the most heavily speculated about, which makes it unusually hard to find out what is actually confirmed. This guide covers only what Rockstar or Take-Two have said directly. Everything unconfirmed is marked as such.

The setting

The game is set in the state of Leonida, a fictional version of Florida, with Vice City as its main urban centre. This is confirmed: it is the premise of both official trailers and Rockstar’s own Newswire posts. Leonida extends well beyond the city itself, and the trailers show swamp, beach, rural and highway environments.

Vice City last appeared as a full setting in 2002. This is not that map rebuilt, it is a new one.

The characters

Two protagonists, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. Lucia was shown first and is the series’ first confirmed female protagonist. Trailer 2 revealed both full names and framed the game around their relationship as a criminal conspiracy tightens around them.

How the dual-protagonist structure works in play has not been detailed. GTA V’s three-character switching is the obvious reference point, but Rockstar has not said this game works the same way.

Platforms

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S are confirmed. A PC version has not been announced. That pattern matches GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, both of which arrived on PC well after their console release, so a later PC version is a reasonable expectation rather than a confirmed fact.

Release timing

The release window has moved more than once. Treat any specific date you see as unconfirmed unless it comes from Rockstar’s Newswire or a Take-Two earnings statement. Take-Two’s quarterly earnings calls have consistently been the venue where timing is actually addressed, which is why they are worth watching more closely than any leak.

What has not been confirmed

  • Map size. Every figure circulating is an estimate derived from trailer footage.
  • Online mode details. Rockstar has said almost nothing about the multiplayer component.
  • Price. Widely discussed, not announced.
  • Returning characters or locations from previous games. Fan theories, not statements.
  • PC release date. Not announced at all.

How to follow it without being misled

Almost every GTA VI story that turns out to be wrong traces back to an anonymous source repeated across aggregators until it looks corroborated. Two sources are actually authoritative: Rockstar’s Newswire, and Take-Two Interactive’s investor communications. If a claim cannot be traced to one of those, it is a rumour regardless of how many outlets carried it.
