Grand Theft Auto 6 is launching with a twist on the physical edition: you’re getting a box with a code inside, not a disc. Take-Two’s CEO explained the reasoning, and it basically comes down to where the industry actually is right now.

According to Take-Two leadership, gaming has shifted hard toward digital. The company cited that the industry is now well over 90% digital, making the traditional disc-in-a-box model increasingly obsolete. That’s the logic behind the code-in-a-box approach for GTA 6’s physical release.

What This Means for Players

If you prefer buying physical copies—whether for collection, resale potential, or just the ritual of walking into a store—you’re still getting a box on the shelf. You just won’t own the disc. Instead, you’ll get a redemption code that unlocks the game on your platform of choice. It’s a compromise between retail presence and the realities of modern game distribution.

This isn’t entirely new; plenty of AAA releases have already shifted to this model. But GTA 6 is one of the biggest launches on the horizon, so seeing Rockstar and Take-Two lean into it signals where even the most traditional triple-A publishers see the industry heading.

The Bigger Picture

The 90% digital figure is worth sitting with. It reflects real consumer behavior—most people download games now rather than buy physical media. Storage is bigger, internet is faster, and the friction of a download has become negligible for most players. Take-Two’s decision to explain their reasoning publicly suggests they’re anticipating pushback from players who prefer physical ownership, but they’re confident the numbers back them up.

Whether you like it or not, this is the direction major publishers are moving. GTA 6’s physical release is a symptom of a larger shift that’s already well underway.
