Jagex Commits to Never Using Generative AI in RuneScape’s Player-Facing Content

Jagex has committed that no generative AI will be used in any player-facing asset across RuneScape 3 or Old School RuneScape, while allowing it for internal tooling only.

Jagex has drawn a firm line on generative AI, and it’s not a vague policy statement. SVP of Product James Dobrowski told GamesIndustry.biz the studio has “a pretty hard line stance” that no generative AI will ever appear in anything a RuneScape player can “touch, hear, or feel.”

Where the Line Sits

The commitment covers visual assets, sound effects, music, and every texture or character model players interact with directly. Dobrowski was explicit that AI is fair game for internal tooling efficiency, things that make development faster without touching what ships in the game, but not for driving creative decisions or generating player-facing content. Jagex is also auditing its external development partners to make sure AI-generated material doesn’t slip into RuneScape or Old School RuneScape through outsourced work.

Part of a Bigger Pattern

Jagex isn’t alone in drawing this line; Games Workshop has taken a similar stance to “respect human workers,” while other studios have quietly walked back AI use in concept art after community pushback, including Larian Studios. But Jagex’s commitment is unusually specific for a studio running two live-service MMORPGs at once, given the sheer volume of assets that ship across RuneScape 3 and OSRS every year.

Why It Matters

RuneScape’s community has spent 25 years building a relationship with a game that feels handmade. As generative AI adoption spreads across the industry, Jagex is betting that keeping every player-facing asset human-made is worth more to its audience than whatever efficiency gains AI content tools might offer.
