Riot Games is closing in on making its esports operations sustainable, and the path isn’t sponsorships or media rights: it’s digital cosmetics sold directly to fans.

How the Model Works

Riot shared over $100 million in digital item revenue with VALORANT Champions Tour teams last year alone, built on Champions bundles, regional season capsules, and team-branded capsules split 50/50 between Riot and qualifying orgs. League of Legends esports runs a similar structure through its Global Revenue Pool, which distributes digital content revenue across Tier 1 teams by general share, competitive performance, and fan engagement. Teams like Sentinels have used strong capsule sales as proof of fan engagement to land traditional sponsors, turning the digital revenue into a flywheel rather than a one-off payout.

Why the Shift Matters

Riot has historically run a tight leash on its competitive ecosystem, requiring strict approval for anyone wanting to organize tournaments around its games. Reaching toward esports sustainability has pushed the company to loosen that grip and lean harder into digital sales as the primary funding mechanism instead. Executives have publicly noted that traditional sponsorship dollars have also come back in a real way over the past two years, adding a second leg to the model rather than replacing it.

Why It Matters

Esports has a long history of orgs burning through sponsor money and folding when deals dry up. A publisher-funded, digital-first revenue model gives teams across League, VALORANT, and TFT a more predictable floor, and it’s a structure other publishers running competitive scenes will be watching closely.
