Making Your First Gold in Old School RuneScape
Last updated August 5, 2026
Gold in Old School RuneScape is not the goal, it is the thing that removes friction from everything else. Runes, ammunition, food, tools and gear all cost money, and an account with no income stalls no matter how many levels it has.
How early income works
Almost all early money comes from one of three sources: gathering raw materials and selling them, processing materials into something worth more, or killing things that drop valuable items. Gathering is the most reliable when you are new because it has no requirements beyond a tool and a level.
The Grand Exchange sets prices, and prices move. Before committing an hour to any method, check what the output actually sells for rather than trusting a number you read somewhere.
Gathering skills that pay
Mining, Fishing and Woodcutting are the standard three. Each follows the same shape: low levels produce items worth almost nothing, and a specific level threshold unlocks a resource that is genuinely in demand. The money is in reaching that threshold, not in grinding the levels below it.
This is why gathering is best treated as training that happens to pay, rather than as a job. You are buying levels and income at the same time.
Processing and crafting
Turning raw materials into finished goods usually adds value, and sometimes it does not. Cooked food, smelted bars and crafted items all sell for more than their inputs at certain levels and less at others. The margin is the whole point, so check both sides on the Grand Exchange before you buy inputs in bulk.
Combat as income
Killing monsters for drops becomes viable once your combat stats can handle enemies that drop something worth having. Below that point, combat costs you money in food and supplies rather than making it. This is the main reason the early quests that boost combat matter: they get you past the unprofitable stretch faster.
The gold-per-hour trap
Every method has a headline number attached to it somewhere, and those numbers assume perfect play, high levels, no travel time and current prices. As a new player you will not hit them, and chasing the highest one usually means grinding something you have no levels for.
A method you will actually keep doing at a modest rate beats a better method you abandon after twenty minutes.
What to do with your first gold
- Buy the tools that make your chosen skills faster. This pays back immediately.
- Buy food. Running out mid-fight costs more than the food would have.
- Buy runes for teleports once you can afford them. Travel time is the largest hidden cost in the early game.
- Do not buy gear you cannot equip yet.
A note on buying gold
Real world trading is against the game rules and accounts are banned for it regularly, including buyers. It is also the main funding mechanism for the account theft and scamming that new players are targeted by. Do not.
