Old School RuneScape vs RuneScape 3: Which One Should You Play?

Last updated August 5, 2026

Jagex runs two RuneScape games at the same time, and new players routinely install the wrong one. They share a name, a world map and a history, and almost nothing else about how they feel to play.

Where the split came from

RuneScape has been running and updating continuously since the early 2000s. In 2013, after years of changes that a large part of the community disliked, Jagex restored an older backup of the game and launched it as Old School RuneScape. Both have been developed separately ever since. Old School is not a nostalgia server, it receives regular content updates, but they are shaped by a very different design philosophy.

Combat is the real difference

This is the decision, and everything else is secondary. Old School uses the original click-and-wait combat: you select an attack style, click a target, and the outcome resolves on a tick. Skill lives in positioning, prayer switching, gear swaps and food timing rather than in an ability rotation.

RuneScape 3 uses an ability system with cooldowns, resource-building basic attacks and spenders. It is closer to a modern MMO combat bar. Some players find it far more engaging; others find it turned a relaxed game into a demanding one.

If you like the idea of a game you can play with one hand while listening to something, Old School is the answer. If you want combat that asks for your full attention, RuneScape 3.

Pace and progression

Old School is slower on purpose. Levels take longer, upgrades are further apart, and reaching a milestone is meant to be an event. RuneScape 3 progresses faster and layers in more systems: additional skills, more convenience unlocks, and a great deal more to manage.

Slower is not automatically better. It suits people who want a long-term project and frustrates people who want to see content this month.

Monetisation

Both games sell membership. RuneScape 3 also sells cosmetic and convenience items through a treasure hunter system that Old School does not have. Old School’s community has repeatedly voted against that kind of monetisation, and updates there generally go through a player poll before release.

That polling system is itself a reason people choose Old School: the game changes slowly and with consent.

Community and information

Old School has the larger active population and by far the larger volume of community guides, tools and discussion. If you are the kind of player who wants a wiki open on a second monitor, both are well documented, but Old School is better served.

How to choose

  • Pick Old School if you want the original game, slower progression, simpler combat, and a community that votes on changes.
  • Pick RuneScape 3 if you want modern MMO combat, faster progression, more skills and more systems to engage with.
  • Try both. A single membership does not cover both games, but the free portion of each is enough to know within an evening which one you want.

There is no wrong answer here, only a mismatch between the game you install and the way you want to spend your time.
